The Right Beer, Car Washes, Middleswarth Chips: Your Penn State Gameday Superstitions

At this point, I’m not sure if they are superstitions or more so things that keep me occupied from going insane thinking about games but over the course of time, I’ve become (probably) annoyingly superstitious about Penn State football.

From a certain pregame playlist that is specifically tuned for the length of time for the drive to the tailgate lot, an Arnold Palmer to start the morning – usually from the same Sheetz – and a few others that I’m not going to share so you won’t judge me too much, it’s a part of my gameday.

I also know they’re a part of your gamedays. Last week, we asked you to share some of them and we got some fantastic response. Thanks to everyone below who shared.

I haven’t drunk Bud Light during a game since 2017. I switched from Bud Light to Michelob Ultra at halftime of the Iowa game that year. Then I switched from Mick Ultra to Bud Light around halftime of the Ohio State game. Figured it out the next morning. Haven’t touched Bud Light during a game since.

Must wear items: Blue and white beaded bracelet (made by a sibling of a fellow Blue Band member for our 2006 Orange Bowl trip), Paw earrings (can not be crooked or upside)

Wear opposing team’s hat and learn their greeting to show sportsmanship pregame. Yes, ‘Go Blue’ or ‘O-H’ are hard to spit out.

Bringing and eating peanut chews to every game and making sure car was washed prior to tailgate! Those are just the big ones there are many more such as entering same gate, using same rest room, etc.

I have to purchase a small bag of Middleswarth BBQ potato chips and a 20 oz. bottle of Mountain Dew at the same store on the way to the tailgate. If it is an away game (and I don’t go), I make sure I have a supply of said potato chips at my home. I live in Michigan.

Need to wear my lucky belt. My dog needs to chew up a plush toy of the opposing team’s mascot.

Peanut M&Ms. As a kid, my uncle Bill always brought them to tailgates and one of us had to rip the top open in a perfect pouring spout. (Now they all have ziplock tops – cowards.) The fun part is that this tradition has spread to our friends and college roommates. Anyone who ever attended a Bradley tailgate with us now swears by Peanut M&Ms.

Gameday Superstition: I will wear Penn State paraphernalia before kickoff but take it off during the game.  In the past, it seems like every time I wear something PSU during a game, we lose the game.

Bloody Mary’s for “big games” like Michigan and Ohio State. Should probably stop doing it seeing as it hasn’t worked in a while…

Should be in seat to see drum major do flip if not could cause team to lose and causes me a lot of stress if I miss it. Beer drinking during season should be from same type of container, if you start season drinking beer in cans you must drink it from cans entire season when watching games at home, and all cans you did drink during game can not be thrown out till game is over when watching games at home Must drink from same type of cup or same glass the entire season. Cups at tailgates should be blue or clear, drinking from red cups is bad karma and should only be used for beer pong or flip cup. Should be standing for kick off whether at home or at game. If watching game at home, bathroom breaks can only be between quarters or halftime, no breaks allowed at any other time, this could cause a loss. Penn State flag should be hung outside day before season starts and not taken down till season is over. Chair and tv table must be placed in same spot in living room watch game

(A quick note about that last one: I’m fairly certain this is my mom so now you know where I get it from.)
