In the pantheon of awards, it’s by far the most prestigious handed out by a niche Penn State blog that primarily focuses on fan involvement and sports media that one can win.

It’s the second time we’ve handed out the Stuff Somers Says With Steve Penn State Sportsperson Of The Year award, and this year it goes to Penn State football’s MVP.

Tyler Warren has been named the 2024 SSSWSPSSPOTY after a fan vote decided the winner.

We narrowed down the field to four entrants including Alyssa Naeher, James Franklin, Katie Schumacher-Cawley and Warren. The tight end beat Schumacher-Cawley by less than a percentage point in the vote and became the first student-athlete to win the award. Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft won the inaugural edition last year.

Warren was the biggest factor in Penn State’s 2024 season (so far). In particular, his impressive performance against USC gave Penn State a key win to help secure home field advantage in the opening round of the College Football Playoff.

Warren’s snap-to-catch touchdown will likely be remembered as the play of 2024 as well and the play reminded the country what a weapon he has been for Penn State.

Warren scored tallied receiving, rushing and even passing touchdowns throughout the season, in addition to several highlight reel catches.

Throughout the season, the Virginia native has climbed up the record books. Warren now owns the most touchdowns by a tight end in school history, surpassing Pat Freiermuth (17) and owns the most catches in the season by a tight end as well (88). He currently sits just nine catches away from tying the single-season mark by any receiver at Penn State  and with a deep playoff run, could break Allen Robinson’s single-season yards mark of 1,432.

Those marks also earned him the first John Mackey Award – given to the best tight end in America and several first- and second-team All-American honorees. Warren also became the first Penn Stater to finish in the top 10 of Heisman voting at seventh, since Saquon Barkley did it in 2017. It was also the highest a tight end has finished in the voting since 1977.

For his win of SSSWSPSSPOTY, Warren wins the continued admiration of Penn State fans everywhere and the blog post you just read.
