You filled in the gaps nicely.
We asked you to share the games you felt were essential to the Penn State football story after we took a stab at it and below are just some of your answers. You gave us answers for games across several decades and explained your logic as well. We’ve edited those explanations for clarity.
NC State ‘67 – Nov. 11, 1967
First win over a ranked team during the Paterno era, and with a great goal line stand to save the game, the start of Linebacker U.
McCloskey’s Corner – Sept. 25, 1982
The controversial Mike McCloskey first down catch for PSU. Led to a national title that season.
‘83 Sugar Bowl – Jan. 1 1983
The Lions would defeat the Herschel Walker-led Georgia Bulldogs for Joe Paterno’s first official National Championship.
‘86 Alabama – Oct. 25, 1986
Supposedly overrated team goes on the road and makes a national statement on the way to second Natty
‘94 Ohio State – Oct. 29, 1994
In their second year playing in the Big Ten conference, the Lions dominated Ohio State. The Lions had the most prolific offense in the country. This game signified Penn State’;s arrival as one of the blue bloods in the Big Ten and they would go on to an undefeated season and Rose Bowl victory over Oregon. Unfortunately, the national title was awarded to Nebraska who was also undefeated. The results of this season led to serious talk of establishing a playoff system.
‘05 Ohio State – Oct. 8, 2005
As a 1993 born, this is the first game I really remember watching. This team was special in its own way. Of course we had the greatest college LB in Pauly P, but the secondary was tough! And Michael Robinson…Oh and this guy named Tamba Hali who Troy Smith is still trying to figure out what hit him after this game. Great game and to some, it is the greatest moment in Beaver Stadium history.
409 – Oct. 29, 2011
Come on. Win 409. Need we say more? This was the one bright spot for Penn State in a year that would eventually be plagued with allegations, confirmations and sanctions.
“All of them”
